The personal details of 100 million Facebook users have been collected and published online in a downloadable file and tossed up on the Internet in a handy 2.5GB torrent file. The file was posted by Ron Bowes, an online security consultant.

Bowes used code to scan the 500 million Facebook profiles for information not hidden by privacy settings. The resulting file, which allows people to perform searches of various different types, has been downloaded by several thousand people.

This kind of stuff is unsettling in the sense that privacy policies on Facebook have fluctuated frequently in the past, but I really can’t be furious over this leak of information. Simply put, the users of Facebook are posting their information to a website owned by a corporation. I feel as if it is their responsibility to keep up with their privacy settings when using a medium that they do not own. People may have a right to privacy but it is their responsibility to exercise that right.
